Istanbul Transportation, Made Simple
How to use the Istanbulkart, get in from the airport and ride the metro, trams and ferries, explained in plain English for first-time visitors.
Istanbul transport in 60 seconds
- Buy an Istanbulkart from a ticket machine at any metro, tram or Marmaray station, or at a ferry pier.
- Load it with Turkish lira (cash or bank card, depending on the machine).
- Tap it on the reader every time you board: metro, tram, bus, ferry, Marmaray and funicular.
- Travelling together? One card works for the whole group. Tap once per person.
Local tip: Load a little more than you think you need. Machines get busy at rush hour, and some only take cash.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an Istanbulkart as a tourist?
In practice, yes. It is the simplest way to pay on the metro, trams, buses, ferries, Marmaray and funiculars, and rides cost less than with single tickets. See our Istanbul Card guide.
Can two people share one card?
Yes. Tap the card once for each person at the gate or on the bus. Each tap is charged separately.
How do I get from the airport to the city?
From Istanbul Airport (IST), take the M11 metro or a Havaist bus. From Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), the M4 metro runs to Kadıköy. Full details are in Getting to Istanbul.
Is public transport safe for visitors?
Yes, it is busy but safe. Keep bags in front of you on crowded trams and trains, especially on the T1 in summer.
