What to expect
A traditional hammam ritual follows a set rhythm. At Çukurcuma Hamamı it goes like this:
- You warm up and sweat beside the marble basin (kurna) to open the pores.
- An attendant scrubs your whole body with a kese, a coarse exfoliating mitt.
- You lie on the heated marble platform (göbektaşı) for a soap-bubble foam massage.
- Warm water is poured over you to rinse, and you finish with a rest and herbal tea in the lounge.
Everything is provided: towels, slippers, the kese mitt, olive oil soap and shampoo. You wear swimwear during the ritual (bikini or swim shorts). Bring your own, or use the single-use ones offered at reception.
Tip: Arrive at least 20 minutes early. You’ll fill in a short health form, and you can ask for a male or female therapist.

Good to know before you book
- Couples: you share the hammam itself, but massage rooms are private and for one person, so couples’ massages aren’t available.
- Children: under-12s aren’t admitted. Guests aged 12 to 17 need a parent or guardian with them, and massages are for adults only.
- Health: treatments aren’t offered during pregnancy. If you have a heart condition, blood pressure problems or a skin condition, check with your doctor first.
- Before you go: skip body lotions and sunbathing on the day, so the scrub works properly.
- Cancellations: full refund up to 4 hours before, 50% refund after that.
How to get there by public transport
Çukurcuma sits on the hill between Tophane and İstiklal Avenue. The streets are steep and partly cobbled, so wear comfortable shoes. All of these routes take an Istanbulkart.
- From Sultanahmet or Eminönü: take the T1 tram towards Kabataş and get off at Tophane, then walk uphill into Çukurcuma.
- From Taksim: take the M2 metro to Taksim (or ride the F1 funicular up from Kabataş), walk along İstiklal Avenue towards Galatasaray, then head downhill through the side streets.
- From Kadıköy: take the ferry to Karaköy, then the T1 tram one stop to Tophane.
- By taxi: ask for Çukurcuma Caddesi, Firuzağa. The lanes are narrow, so the driver may drop you a short walk away.
